Burnout is not the end all be all

Burnout is not the end all be all

Are you experiencing burnout?

Struggling to cope with the stress that is happening in your workplace? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Sometimes you manage to keep your head above water, but other times, you feel like you are not on top of the situation. This is called burnout. It is a common condition that you can find among people with strenuous jobs.

What does burnout do to you?

Burnout is not something that happens suddenly. It builds up over some time through a series of stages. It is supported by your actions, feelings, and thoughts. These few stages don’t feel at all serious in the beginning, but after a while, you start feeling them. Let’s take a look at these stages.

  1. Cravings – the first phase comes very lightly, in the form of cravings for salt and sugar. This means that you feel your energy levels dropping. You think that a certain type of food will make you better. And it does, for a short period – after that, it has the opposite effect! But, once you get these cravings, be very wary – the situation is going south.

  2. Stress and irritability – after these cravings for salt and sugar have been satiated more than once, you start to stress about your weight. This is not a result of a poor diet, it is the second stage of burnout. You start feeling stressed all the time, and you can also feel irritability knocking on your front door too. The worst part – the more you try to control them, the worse they get.

  3. Memory and concentration issues – better known as brain fog. If your mind seems to be doing a lot of that lately, it might be time to take a step back and access the situation. Having some memory and concentration issues is a clear sign that something is not right. However, knowing how to recognize it is a plus. This means that you are aware of the issue and doing everything you can to resolve it.

  4. Depression – also known as lack of motivation and poor mood. This is the final stage where you start feeling like something is weighing you down. It does not even have to be depression, a constant poor mood is an indicator that something is wrong.

Whenever you are at your workplace and you feel like you are lacking the motivation to end your tasks for the day, it is time to reconnect with yourself. What you need to remember is that this is something that can be amended. So take a deep breath and start looking out for yourself.

Burnout is not a thing that you should take lightly. However, if you have started feeling it, it might be difficult to tackle it all on your own.
